What I'm reading right now is Jane Smiley's brief biography of Charles Dickens.

The Mezzanine was exhilirating: the novel focuses on the minute and the overlooked, and you step away from it full of half-thoughts on the smallest bits of our everyday world: staplers, milk cartons, broken shoelaces. Far more fun than it sounds, and funny too, but a hard sell.
